The honest answer

When painting your kitchen
makes sense — and when it doesn't.

A hand-painted kitchen makes sense when the carcasses and doors are sound but the colour or finish is dated — solid wood, MDF, veneered and even some laminate doors can be painted with the right primer. It doesn't make sense if the units are damaged, the layout doesn't work, or the doors are peeling foil-wrapped vinyl.

The cost is driven by the number of doors and drawer fronts, whether we paint the frames, end panels and plinths, the amount of preparation the existing finish needs, and the paint system — we use a proper primer, undercoat and a hard-wearing eggshell or satin topcoat, brushed or sprayed.

Tom Harvey Contractors provides free site visits and itemised written quotes within 48 hours. We'll tell you honestly whether your kitchen is worth painting — and if it isn't, what a replacement would cost instead.

Common questions

Your questions
answered.

Most London kitchens cost £1,800–£4,500 + VAT to paint professionally, depending on the number of doors and drawers, whether frames and end panels are included, and the finish. A typical medium kitchen with 15–18 doors is around £2,800–£3,200 + VAT. New handles, hinges and wall decoration are optional extras.
Solid wood, MDF, veneered and most laminate doors can be painted with the correct adhesion primer. Foil-wrapped vinyl doors that are peeling or bubbling generally can't be painted successfully — the vinyl needs to come off first, which is rarely worth it. We'll tell you honestly at the site visit.
Yes, if it's prepared and painted properly — degreased, sanded, primed with an adhesion primer and finished with a hard-wearing eggshell or satin. A professionally painted kitchen should last 8–10 years with normal use. Most failures you see online are from skipping the primer.
Both. Spraying gives the flattest, most factory-like finish and is ideal for modern flat doors; hand-brushing gives the classic painted-kitchen look on shaker and panelled doors. We'll recommend the best option for your doors and your budget.
We use a dedicated adhesion primer followed by a durable water-based eggshell or satin — Farrow & Ball Modern Eggshell, Little Greene Intelligent Eggshell, or trade equivalents from Tikkurila or Benjamin Moore. All are washable and hard-wearing.
Mostly, yes. Doors and drawers are taken away or worked on in a dust-sheeted area, and the carcasses stay in place — you'll have your sink, hob and fridge throughout. We keep the kitchen usable overnight and finish in 3–8 days depending on size.
Yes. New handles transform a painted kitchen — we fill and re-drill the old holes so any handle style works. Soft-close hinge upgrades are also straightforward while the doors are off.
Considerably. A hand-painted kitchen costs £1,800–£4,500, while a new mid-range kitchen supplied and fitted in London is typically £8,000–£18,000. If the layout works and the units are sound, painting is the best value upgrade available.
